Being at peace with God is not automatic, because by nature we are separated from Him. This separation is at the root of our selfishness, loneliness, and feelings of meaninglessness. This nature is automatic. We all suffer from the same problem – sin.

How Do We Know This?
“There is no one who is righteous, not even one”- Romans 3:10

“For all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glorious standard” – Romans 3:23

Because God is holy and just, He cannot allow sin to go unpunished. Just like there is a penalty for breaking man’s laws, there is a penalty for breaking God’s. That penalty is death.

“The wages (penalty) for sin is death…”- Romans 6:23
